Colorless transparent crystallization with luster. Has hygroscopicity, smell of nitric acid and sourness. Relative desity 2.83. Melting point 30C. Boiling point 80C (loses 5 crystal water. Decompose to become bismuth trioxide when above 590C. Dissolve in nitric acid containing water. Deposit to form bismuth oxynitrate when meeting water. Dissolve in glycerol and acetone. Does not dissolve in acetic acid and ethyl acetate.

Used for making other bismuth salt, producing precipitation of alkali. Material of making diversified catalyst, flaring paint and porcelain enamel.
